Project lead: Equinor ASA on behalf of future Northern Lights JV
The Northern Lights project is part of the Norwegian CCS full-scale project, which incudes capture of CO2 from industrial sources in the Oslofjord region, shipping of liquid CO2 from capture sites to an onshore terminal on Norway’s west coast, and pipeline transport from onshore to an offshore storage complex in the North Sea.
The project is a direct result of the Norwegian Government’s ambition to develop a full-scale value chain in Norway by 2024. The intention is to then use the Northern Lights infrastructure for additional CO2 sources and expand its size.
Northern Lights is an “open access” CO2 infrastructure providing transport and storage for European industry. It will provide industrial capture facilities with the opportunity to safely store their CO2 on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The transport of CO2 by shipping allows for a large geographical coverage of capture facilities, highlighting the potential for European industrial decarbonisation in combination with Norwegian CO2 storage.
